Congratulations to Alicia Medrano from Laredo Middle School and Juan Carter from South Middle School:
the 2007 Colorado DtWT Ambassadors!
Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher attorneys Jessica Brown and Taggart Hansen presented the awards to the two Colorado Do the Write Thing Challenge program ambassadors, Alicia Medrano from Laredo Middle School and Juan Carter from South Middle School, on May 10, 2007, at the annual Recognition Dinner.
The Do the Write Thing program is a national initiative sponsored by the National Campaign to Stop Violence that specifically targets middle school students, challenging them to critically think about the topic of youth violence and, more importantly, youth violence prevention. The DtWT program encourages teachers to facilitate discussions in their classroom on the topic of youth violence and youth violence prevention and then give the "challenge," which is a voluntary writing assignment where the students answer three questions: (1) How has youth violence affected my life?; (2) What are the causes of youth violence?; and (3) What can I do about youth violence?
Since the 1999-2000 school year, Gibson Dunn has been involved in developing the Colorado effort and making the program available to middle school students in the Denver metro area. This year, nearly 900 students from Denver Public, Cherry Creek Public, and Jefferson County Public Schools, as well as the Archdiocese of Denver schools, participated in the Challenge.
Over 150 teachers, sponsors, parents, and students attended the DtWT Recognition Dinner where all the semi-finalists were honored for their participation in this Challenge. As a reward for their outstanding submissions on youth violence and youth violence prevention, the two Colorado ambassadors, Alicia and Juan, will attend the July 2007 National Recognition Ceremonies in Washington, D.C. with one parent/guardian and their sponsoring teacher, compliments of Frontier Airlines.
